Was reading the forums at Webhostingtalk.com the other day to read about dedicated internet servers. Though I am not poor, they’re a little too expensive for just messing about. What i didn’t know was that there is a sort of poor man’s dedicated server, calles vps, which stands for virtual private server. Basically it’s kinda like Virtual PC or VMware where you host one OS on another. I checked out some providers and decided to go with TekTonic. So far I really like it. It’s been fun shaping the server. I choose Fedora Core 2 as the OS since I was already a little familiar with that. Have set up secure pop3 and imap, postfix/procmail for email, icecast to stream Dylan mp3’s, ftp services etc.. Still have to install some kind of content management system, webmail etc. Have learned a lot already so far. The server can be found at wickedmessenger.net named after the Dylan song from the album John Wesley Harding.
